Description: The Responsibility Navigator is a governance framework produced by the EU-funded Res-AGorA project (2014–2016). It provides a set of ten principles and requirements to guide responsibility-related governance in research and innovation. Instead of prescriptive rules, it offers a flexible “compass” for decision-makers to navigate the complexity of R&I governance. It acknowledges that what counts as “responsible” varies by context and thus facilitates ongoing stakeholder debate, negotiation, and learning to shape governance arrangements.
Key Resources: The Navigator document and Res-AGorA reports are key references. They outline principles like Reflection, Inclusion, Modularity, and Adaptability as heuristics for designing governance processes in labs, companies, or policy agencies. A co-construction method is also provided to help organizations implement these principles with their stakeholders.

How It Helps Researchers: For research leaders and project coordinators, the Navigator serves as a high-level toolkit to institutionalize ORRI. For example, a university faculty can use it to develop governance policies that encourage researchers to consider societal impacts. It essentially helps build internal governance structures (like ethics boards, stakeholder forums, and review processes) that make responsible innovation a sustained ambition rather than a one-off effort. This supports researchers by embedding a culture of responsibility in their institutions.
